About C J Allen
I am a mixed-media artist creating original paintings and fine art prints inspired by nature, memories, dreams, and the beauty found in everyday life.
My work brings together watercolor, gouache, acrylics, colored pencils, and pastels. Each medium adds its own texture and character, allowing every piece to develop naturally through color, movement, and detail.
At the heart of each painting is a simple hope. To create art that feels personal, brings a sense of connection, and reminds people to notice the beauty around them.
Studio Process
How the Work Is Made

Observation
Every painting begins with close observation — of light shifting on water, the weight of morning fog, the particular quiet of a forest floor. Cathy keeps a daily sketch journal to capture these moments before they fade.

Layering
A loose watercolor wash establishes the mood and light. Layers of watercolor paint is applied until the right amount of color and depth are created. Gouache and acrylics may be applied in areas if needed to enhance the composition. Gouache adds opacity and temperature contrast. Acrylics bring texture. Colored pencils and pastels draw out the fine details and final luminosity.

Finishing
Each finished piece is scanned at archival resolution. Limited edition fine-art prints are produced on top quality paper to preserve the texture and tonal depth of the original.

A Life in Art
Early Beginnings
Cathy's love of art started early, spending afternoons sketching the Wisconsin landscapes that surrounded her childhood home.
First Watercolor Study
A workshop in Chicago introduced her to loose watercolor technique — a medium that would become the core of her practice.
Mixed Media Discovery
Experimenting with gouache, acrylics, and colored pencil over watercolor washes, Cathy found her signature layered style.
Pieces of Dreams
The studio name was born from a poem she wrote at dawn — a perfect title for work that lives in the space between memory and dream.
